What is a final drive / travel motor?
The final drive is the last component in the drive line at each track. It’s a hydraulic travel motor coupled to a planetary gearbox: the motor converts hydraulic pressure from the pump into rotation, and the planetary reduction gears slow that rotation down while multiplying torque, so the machine can drive the tracks and crawl over difficult ground without straining the rest of the hydraulic system. It works alongside the hydraulic pump, rotary manifold (centre swivel) and swivel joint to control track speed and direction. “Final drive”, “travel motor”, “track motor” and “drive reducer” all refer to this assembly.
Symptoms of a failing final drive
Catch these early — running a failing final drive damages the surrounding hydraulics:
- The machine veers or pulls to one side — the classic sign that one final drive is down on power. Drive straight on level ground; if it crabs, suspect the drive on the slow side.
- Loss of drive power or speed — sluggish tracking, can’t climb or push like it used to.
- Screeching, grinding or whining noise from the drive — failing bearings or gears.
- Oil leaks — gear oil weeping from the drive, or the outer seal starting to leak.
- Overheating — the gearbox running too hot to touch.
- Excessive vibration through the track on that side.
What actually causes final-drive failure
- Clogged case-drain filter (~90% of failures). This is the single biggest cause. The case-drain filter protects the motor from contamination; when it clogs, pressure builds and destroys the motor. Check and replace it on schedule — it’s cheap insurance.
- Weak charge pump (the #2 cause). A weak charge pump can’t supply enough pressure to release the internal brake — effectively driving with the parking brake on, which cooks the drive.
- Contaminated or low gear oil — accelerates wear on bearings and gears.
- Worn seals — let oil out and contamination in.
The parts that fail
Inside a final drive, the common failure areas are the main bearings, the gears and gear bearings, the upper and lower shafts, and the seals. Because rebuilding a hydro motor (with labour) often costs almost as much as a new unit, for major failures a replacement final drive is usually the better buy — while routine case-drain-filter and oil maintenance is what prevents getting there in the first place.
Repair or replace?
- Seal leak caught early, drive otherwise sound → a seal kit may be worth it.
- Bearing/gear noise, metal in the oil, or motor damage → replace the unit. The labour to strip and rebuild a hydro motor approaches the cost of a new final drive, so a replacement is usually the smarter spend and gets you running faster.
